Stypa. The ritual of loss
The Polish name 'stypa' (that is a funeral meal) comes from a Latin word stipis, which was used by many pagan cultures to describe a coin put in the mouth of the dead. Another meaning was an oblation for the funeral meal.
Nowadays it is also cultivated through bringing the self made dishes of food to the mourners. Isn't it therefore like in the saying by Michail Bachtin that „the feast always celebrates victory, it is in it's very origin..."?
This half artistic and culinary event will be a confrontation with: How close we can get to each other in situation of our own loss?
